Service stories
The Thompson School at UNH offers
an associates degree in Community
Service and Leadership. This program teaches students how to make
a difference in their community.
Ashlee Iber
is one of the most dedicated service leaders at UNH. Ashlee has helped
organize a warmth drive at UNH and recently presented at the MLK Service
and Activism Conference. She has been active with the Relay for Life
as well as the founder of the UNH chapter of Colleges Against Cancer.
A close-knit
community. Each Monday evening, UNH students and Durham community
members gather at Waysmeet House to create hand-knit and crocheted blankets,
hats, mittens and sweaters to send to displaced Afghan families. The
Afghans for Afghans gathering has spawned new knitters, new friendships,
and warm woolen goods for needy children and families in Afghanistan.
For information, contact Sylvia Foster: 862-1058.
Here is a sampling of community projects supported by UNH Resident
Halls:
Stoke Hall
works with the Oyster River Youth and Parent Association with Youth
Night Out. Held once a month, these OR
Middle School events include activities ranging from karaoke, crafts,
face painting, a dance hall with a live DJ, tug of war, basketball,
and wild and crazy games of dodgeball.
Christensen
Hall has a community partnership with the UNH CSDC
(Child Study and Development Center). The CSDC is a laboratory school
affiliated with the Department of Family Studies at UNH. A laboratory
school is one with both an early care and education mission and an academic
mission.
Hetzel Hall
has a community service partnership with Seacoast
Reads. A group of Hetzel residents volunteer their time to read
with children twice a week.
